At his last eye doctor appointment his doctor said something like “I can do the math on the digression but it may not be accurate”. So there is not a true and precise time table. Rather, his peripheral vision is slowly fading due to increased blind spots.
Mike is doing 3 trips in 3 years because that was the calling he received late in 2023. It was because he had lived in Oregon for three years and instead of finding wellness kept experiencing the same symptoms he had been having for many years. Part of his mission is an attempt to make up for lost time. You can learn more about this under “Mike’s Story”.
The Continental Divide in the USA is a connected line of the highest peaks which dictate the watershed for the entire country. All precipitation eventually will flow to a major ocean and the Divide dictates which direction the water flows. The biking route is called the “Great Divide Mountain Bike Route” and goes from Banff, Canada to Antelope Wells, New Mexico at the border with Mexico. It is a 2,700 mile route with the majority being on dirt and gravel roads. Its the longest non paved bicycle route on the planet.
The route is 4,200 miles from Virginia to Oregon. Mike’s trip ended up being around 3,500 miles as he took a train through Kansas to avoid a historic statewide heatwave of 106 degree temperatures. The trip was 81 days including rest days and a few days to do filming in Kentucky for the documentary.
The hope for “Eyes On The Horizon” is that it is ready in late spring or summer of 2026. There are a lot of uncertainties at the moment but this is the hope. The film team hopes it gets onto a major streaming platform and is accepted into film festivals.
Charley stays with Mike’s good friends Adrienne and Jason in Bend. A couple of years ago they lost their beloved pup and love having Charley around for a season without having to commit to the entire length of dog ownership. Charley is extremely happy to be in air conditioning and sleep in a king sized bed. She gets lots of love and treats when Mike is away.
